![]() Prodigys waiting for a start at the 2002 North American Prodigy Class Championship Prodigy Comp is the one-design class used at US Windsurfing National Racing Tour events. The board is the Comp version of the Prodigy, made by Mistral. It's 298 cm long; 87 cm wide; with 255 ltrs volume--big enough and long enough to sail effectively in very light winds, and wide enough to plane up quickly when the wind picks up. The Comp hull is equipped with a high performance centerboard and 50 cm fin, and an on-the-fly adjustable mast track. A Starter version hull can be retrofitted with these components. The one design rig is a 8.5 square meter two-cambered race sail, made by North, and sold along with the boards. It can be tuned for low-end power or high end control, and provides a lot of range and performance at a reasonable price. Many competitors use an adjustable outhaul, and some also rig an adjustable downhaul. Any type of sail and rig components may be used in sizes 7.5 or smaller. Comp Class racers range from veterans to beginners. It's a forgiving board, so it's good for learning to race on. It's easier to tack than a traditional longboard, so you have more options. Because it can be sailed in light wind, you rarely get skunked at an event--and actually, some of the best tactical racing takes place in sub-planing conditions. In fully powered conditions it's a fun and easy board to sail. You slide the track back and kick the centerboard up and sail it like a formula board on all points of sail--no struggling with the mast track in survival conditions. It's very fast on the reaches! We'll be posting tuning and sailing tips at this site--stay tuned. Mistral and Mistral dealers will be arranging for charters at many events. Come out and give it a try! |
